Sandy Reid (Wedding Dress Designer) says:

Every bride that I have dressed has said to me "I'm going to lose weight before the wedding so please make the dress at least 2 sizes smaller."

So what is a wedding gown designer to do? 

Since most custom order wedding gowns take 3 or 4 months to be delivered, and alterations take another month, the question is, whether to buy a dress now hoping you will lose the weight or to buy a dress that fits you now and have it altered when it comes in.

The other option these days is to buy a dress “off  the rack”

Meaning waiting until you’ve lost the weight and buying a dress that is available immediately.

This dilemma causes a lot of concern and stress with brides. It’s only natural for brides to want to look like models in their starring moment when attention is focused on them. On your wedding day, it’s only natural to want to look spectacular!  

We believe it is better to lose your weight before you go shopping for your dress as alterations take a lot of time and generally cost a lot of money.

To go further, setting a deadline to lose a certain number of pounds by the final wedding dress fitting date, puts extra pressure on you during the already stressful planning period, and may cause unhealthy eating patterns.

The media, including bridal magazines promote size 0 brides, and brides get caught up in it.

Don't let the wedding dress sample size sway you! They are not the same as your everyday ready to wear clothing. Because they are usually tight fitting, they run smaller than the size you take in your other clothing sizes.

Since wedding dress samples are generally in one size only, larger brides have a tougher time trying on dresses and seeing what they want.

Brides have a vision of how they want to be looked and remembered, and want people to see and tell them how wonderful they look in their dress. You may think that by losing weight you will get that kind of response.

Of course in the end it’s your choice...

Your groom fell in love with you –just the way you are now...

The size of the dress won’t make a difference as to how you feel about each other .

The wedding dress is only the co-star: you are the real star.

Remember: You will look wonderful just by radiating your love and happiness.
