We attract hearts by the qualities we display:
We retain them by the qualities we possess.
Let's start by looking at something of utmost importance: you and your beloved. Being in love is an incredible experience! Human beings are born with a desire to love. We love our families and friends, and finally, the person we choose to marry. It is to that person that we want to give all of our heart, our soul, our mind and our body.
Being in love can feel like you've finally found your forever friend - a person who loves you exactly as you are. Someone who will never hold what they learn about you, against you. A person who will love you even when you're not even likable in any given moment.
As you plan your marriage, know that it means you have an opportunity to continue to grow in love and friendship. Two people create their marriage together- each and every day. When they work together, the possibilities are endless.
Some of you will choose to have a private wedding, just the two of you. Or a wedding that only has a few trusted family or friends. That's great, and reflects what you truly want and desire. You will be able to have a wonderful intimate time and share in depth that ritual that makes the transition. You and your partner provide the strength and passage for each other in a quiet, yet sacred way.
Some will choose a bigger and more public wedding. This allows all who attend the chance to witness the commitment you have made to one another. It gives them a chance to offer their support and blessings to your union. You state your hope, faith, love and trust that your life together will be abundant, warm, and glowing with the love in your hearts. You place your trust in your beloved as he does in you - together you hope your lives will be safe and calm, but you accept the responsibility to stay together even when difficulties come.
Your marriage soothes your thirst for a very unique and special kind of love - the union between a man and woman - and that love brings you both fully alive. Hopefully, you have done all of this just by being yourselves!
A wedding is one of the most important transitions in a person's life. Why is that? You're marking an internal shift from being single to being married. The focus will no longer be on you alone. In front of your family and friends, you create a new life - a marriage. From the day of your marriage forward, you will be a part of a family- a "we", not only a "me."
If that sounds a little scary, that's because it is! An internal shift of this magnitude only happens at a few points in your life.
A good marriage will allow for the fact that neither of you is perfect. Not today, and not in the years to come. Both of you will need to bring forth the very best within you in order to create a "we" that grows with time. You'll need to learn to overlook the small things that your "me" might have problems with, and look toward how to nourish the relationship. When you do that, your relationship will serve as your bedrock- the place to which you return over and over again to receive reassurance, strength, love and hope.
You'll need the spirit of play and joyfulness, so you can enjoy the beauty and pleasure of your life together. You'll need plenty of patience to see you through the times of difficulty. You'll need to give a lot of attention to the practice of kindness so that you can nurture and care of each other in times of pain. You'll need to decide what kind of home environment you want to create. And you can still individually follow some of those things that make you unique and happy.
If you watch a good marriage that has matured over time, you will notice that life hasn't been perfect. Neither partner has been perfect. The marriage has been hit with things that seem beyond its strength, but, through it all, it's important that love and kindness are present. A really good marriage serves as an inspiration to others- an acknowledgment that love can really light the way through our lives.
